The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award was founded in 1956 to encourage personal development and community involvement for youth between the ages of 14-24. In the words of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh, “The Award Programme provides a balanced approach of extra curricular activities for young people and is designed to complement academic achievement and stimulate the qualities of self-reliance, perseverance, effort, initiative and self improvement and to emphasize personal responsibility.” Since its inception over 4 million people in over 100 countries have participated.
